Which Is Better for Teens, Braces vs. Invisalign?

Posted on March 16, 2026

It’s one of the first questions parents ask when an orthodontic consultation confirms what they’ve been suspecting: their kid needs their teeth straightened. Should they opt for braces or Invisalign? Metal or clear? Fixed or removable? The best answer is “it depends”.

What Braces and Invisalign Do

Before getting into the comparison, remember that braces and Invisalign are both trying to accomplish the same thing: moving teeth into better alignment over time. Yes, they do that job differently (brackets and wires versus a series of custom-fitted clear trays), but the goal is the same, and neither option is inherently superior. Each has advantages and limitations, and the right choice depends on your teenager’s specific bite and even their personality.

Should You Choose Braces?

Traditional braces and ceramic braces have two major advantages over Invisalign trays: they’re always working, and your teenager can’t lose them, forget to put them in, or decide that they’d rather not wear them today.

For complex cases like significant crowding, bite issues that require precise three-dimensional tooth movement, or situations where multiple things need to be corrected simultaneously, braces are the better choice.

Braces are also usually more affordable, but Invisalign’s cost has come down over time.

Should You Choose Invisalign Teen?

Invisalign’s appeal is obvious, especially to teenagers worried about the stigma of having metal braces. The trays are nearly invisible, can be removed when necessary, and they don’t come with the food restrictions that braces do.

There’s also a hygiene argument. Brushing and flossing with braces isn’t as easy as it seems, and teenagers aren’t always the most motivated when it comes to oral hygiene. With Invisalign, the trays come out, the teeth get brushed normally, and the trays go back in.

Invisalign has come a long way in terms of what it can treat. Cases that would have required braces 10 years ago can now be handled with clear aligners.

Will They Wear Them?

Invisalign requires your teenager to wear the trays 20 to 22 hours per day. Every hour the trays are out is an hour the treatment isn’t progressing. For a teenager who actually wears them, Invisalign aligners work beautifully. If your teen consistently forgets to put them back in after lunch, the treatment timeline gets longer, and you’ve spent more than you would have on braces that would have been working the whole time.

What about Active Kids?

If your teenager plays contact sports, swims competitively, or is in activities where a mouth full of hardware is a concern, Invisalign’s removability is an advantage. That said, if they’re removing the trays for every practice, every game, and every after-school activity, they may not be hitting that 22-hour daily threshold.

Which Is Right for Your Teen?

The best choice is really about which option makes the most sense given your child’s specific orthodontic needs, lifestyle, and whether they’ll really wear the aligners or not. It’s also important to talk with an orthodontist who can look at actual X-rays and models.
