Why Age 7 Matters

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends every child have a first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. By then, enough permanent teeth have arrived for Las Vegas orthodontist Dr. Sam Faranesh to spot problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth while they are still easy to guide. Most kids this age do not need treatment yet — but for the ones who do, timing is everything.

What Is Phase I (Early) Orthodontic Treatment?

Phase I, also called interceptive orthodontics, is limited treatment for children roughly ages 7 to 10, done while the jaw is still growing. Instead of waiting for every permanent tooth and correcting everything with full braces, we guide growth now so problems never fully develop.

Early treatment can:

• Create room for crowded permanent teeth to come in straight
• Guide jaw growth to correct crossbites, underbites, and severe overbites
• Make room with palate expanders while the palate can still be widened easily
• Stop harmful habits like thumb sucking from reshaping the bite
• Reduce the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
• Shorten — or sometimes prevent — a second phase of braces in the teen years

How It Works at Our Office

Because we combine orthodontics with pediatric dentistry under one roof, Dr. Faranesh and pediatric dentist Dr. Travis Neu monitor your child’s growth together at regular checkups. When early treatment is called for, we use appliances like expanders, space maintainers, and limited braces, typically for 9 to 18 months, followed by a resting period while the remaining permanent teeth come in.
